About Karis
Karis Hastings is a graduate of the Duke University School of Law, where she was named to the Order of the Coif and was a member of the Duke Law Journal. Karis earned her undergraduate degree, a B.A. in English with distinction, from the University of Michigan. Following her graduation from law school in 1987, Karis joined what was then Hogan & Hartson in Washington, D.C. During her time at the firm, which was later renamed Hogan Lovells US LLP, Karis represented telecommunications clients in a broad range of federal and state regulatory proceedings, developing particular expertise in regulatory matters for communications satellite operators and service providers. After nearly 24 years at the firm, Karis left in 2011 to establish SatCom Law LLC.
Karis has spoken on satellite regulatory matters for Law Seminars International and at the National Spectrum Managers Association. She is active in the Satellite Industry Association and the Federal Communications Bar Association (including playing on the FCBA ultimate Frisbee team). Karis is a member of the District of Columbia and Maryland bars and is admitted before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
In 2011, Karis was named in Legal 500 US as one of the top attorneys in the Telecoms and Broadcast: Regulatory category. The publication noted that Karis is recommended by clients as ‘supremely patient, extremely experienced and knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. Government agency officials know, respect and like her.’ Karis was also recognized in the International Who’s Who of Regulatory Communications Lawyers 2011.
